The Physical Science (PS) Series offers events that showcase the current understanding of the origin of the Universe, properties of matter and energy and the relationships between them, and space exploration.
Previous PS events have covered dark matter, Switzerland’s CERN Laboratory, the Hubble Telescope, quarks and the cosmos, navigating earth and space, and the physics of baseball.
Distinguished speakers have included Astronaut John Grunsfeld; Nobel Laureate John C. Mather; and Laura Trouille, Astronomer, Northwestern University & Adler Planetarium.
Cosmologists are making ever more precise measurements of the Universe and have found that they know almost precisely nothing about what it is made of. Only one percent of the Universe is made of the kind of everyday matter that can be seen with telescopes–the stars, the planets, us.

On Oct. 4, 2007, the Adler Planetarium, WTTW Channel 11 and C2ST celebrated the 50th anniversary of the launch of Sputnik, the world’s first man-made orbiting satellite, with Sputnik @ 50, a public program and exclusive talk with Dr. Sergei N. Khrushchev, son of former Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev.
