Look through a microscope, explore Chicago native plants and animals, and learn about science that is protecting our environment. C2ST is hosting the Science Lab at the DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center’s Juneteenth celebration. We will have a variety of hands-on science activities, science resources, and more.

Elijah Taylor

Elijah is a 5th year Ph.D. Candidate in Biological Sciences at Northwestern University. He uses microscopes to study enzymes that interact with DNA to keep it stable within cells.

Laura E. Hunter

My name is Laura E. Hunter, and I am currently a PhD candidate in the Organismal Biology and Anatomy Department at the University of Chicago. My research involves measuring the shapes of the wrist bones of living and fossil monkeys and apes to find out what aspects of the hand and wrist are related to the many different ways primates use their hands, from swinging below tree branches like spider monkeys to walking on knuckles like gorillas. Because us humans are the only primates that don’t use our hands when we are moving through the world, a focus of my research is understanding how our ancestors used their hands — did they walk on their knuckles like gorillas or on their palms like capuchins?

Maya Watts

Maya Watts is a 4th year PhD student at Northwestern University at the Center for for Fundamental Physics (CFP). Maya is a part of the ACME III experiment which measures how uneven the negative charge of the electron is distributed using a heavy molecule in electric and magnetic fields.
