On Thursday, May 2 the Chicago Council on Science and Technology will hold our largest fundraising event of 2019: Science in the City. The evening supports C2ST’s mission and full spectrum of programming. Your support is critical to our mission.

Join us as we celebrate public STEM outreach with STEM community members, academic and industry leaders, educators, and young professionals from across Chicagoland. Guests will engage with each other and C2ST’s leadership throughout the evening which includes a cocktail reception with heavy hors-d’oeuvres, award ceremony, and the chance to win unique and priceless experiences throughout Chicago.

The Chicago Council on Science and Technology will honor two individuals with an “Advancing the Public Understanding of Science & Technology Award” by awarding a “Lifetime Achievement Award” as well as a “Young Professional Award.” C2ST created this award in 2012 to honor individuals who share in the passion and mission of the organization—to increase the awareness of the great R&D taking place in our region. A special award will be granted to our outgoing Board Chair and President-Elect of the National Academy of Engineers, John Anderson.

Lifetime Achievement Award

Wendy L. Freedman, John and Marion Sullivan University Professor in Astronomy and Astrophysics, University of Chicago

Wendy Freedman is a renowned astronomer who was instrumental in precisely measuring the Hubble constant and determining the age of the universe. Freedman received both her BSc and PhD in astronomy and astrophysics from the University of Toronto. In 1984 she accepted a position as a postdoctoral fellow at the Carnegie Observatories in Pasadena, California. In 1987 Freedman became the first woman to join Carnegie’s permanent staff, and in 2003 she became its director. She also initiated the Giant Magellan Telescope project and served as chair of its board of directors from the project’s inception in 2003 until 2015. In 2014 she joined the faculty of the University of Chicago as the John and Marion Sullivan University Professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics. Freedman first rose to prominence leading the Hubble Space Telescope Key Project, which began in the mid-1980s and involved an international group of some 30 astronomers. The team used the Hubble telescope to study Cepheid variable stars in order to estimate intergalactic distances and thus determine the expansion rate of the universe.

Young Professional Award

Kimberly Moore, Founder and President of KDM Engineering

KDM Engineering is a leading power utilities, gas distribution, and telecommunications professional engineering firm headquartered in Chicago, with offices on the east coast. Ms. Moore has her undergraduate and graduate degrees in engineering from Northern Illinois University. After spending several years in various engineering positions, Ms. Moore’s entrepreneurial spirit drove her to pursue her dream of starting her own company in 2008. Under Ms. Moore’s leadership, KDM Engineering has grown to over 60 employees and has successfully completed work on hundreds of projects. Well-known as a fierce supporter of women and minorities in STEM, Ms. Moore has assembled a uniquely diverse team at KDM and started a nonprofit, Calculated Genius, dedicated to helping underrepresented youth explore and connect to engineering. Ms. Moore sits on the NIU Alumni Association board and has received several awards recognizing her hard work in building KDM into a thriving company including: Enterprising Woman of the Year 2018, Engineering News-Record’s 40 Under 40 Midwest, Engineering News-Record’s 20 Under 40 National, Consulting Specifying Engineer’s 40 Under 40 2018, Crain’s 40 Under 40 2019.

Honoree

John L. Anderson, Outgoing Board Chair and President-Elect of the National Academy of Engineers

Since receiving his bachelor’s degree at the University of Delaware and his Ph.D. in chemical engineering at the University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign), John Anderson has served on the faculties of Cornell University, Carnegie Mellon University, Case Western Reserve University and Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). He served as the president of IIT during 2007-2015 and is currently a distinguished professor of chemical engineering. He held senior leadership positions at Carnegie Mellon University (dean of engineering) and Case Western Reserve University (provost and executive vice president). He has published extensively on topics in membrane separations, fluid dynamics, bioengineering, and colloid science, and he has served on advisory committees for many universities. He has mentored 26 doctoral students and many masters students. His major awards include election to the National Academy of Engineering (1992), Guggenheim Fellow at MIT (1982-83), fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the National Engineering Award (2012). In 2014, he was appointed to the National Science Board for a six-year term by President Obama.
