Join C2ST and Fermilab for the Neutrino 2020 Physics Slam!

Have you always wanted to learn about neutrinos? Did you know there is a virtual conference going on with over 3,000 neutrino physicists? The Physics Slam! will be the closing event of the conference. Three attendees will tell the whole world about neutrinos and neutrino research in 10 minutes or less using whatever means they can think of virtually. They will attempt to amaze and educate in hopes of being the Slam! champion. You’ll have a chance to ask any burning questions you might have and vote for your favorite. One of these physicists will walk away as the Neutrino 2020 Slam! Champion. Join us to find out who it will be.

Kirsty Duffy, PhD

Dr. Kirsty Duffy is a physicist at Fermilab, the largest particle accelerator lab in the USA. She studies neutrinos, tiny particles that make up most of our universe but we know very little about. Originally from the North-East of England, Kirsty earned her degree and PhD at the University of Oxford, where she worked on an experiment in Japan trying to understand whether neutrinos could explain why we have a universe made of matter instead of antimatter. Kirsty has been in the US since August 2017 and is having a great time trying to see as much of the country as possible in between research. When she’s not working, Kirsty can be found singing karaoke, drinking wine, running, catching up with friends, or accidentally ordering chips when she wanted fries.

Alan Poon

Alan Poon is a Senior Physicist and Division Deputy at the Nuclear Science Division at Berkeley Lab.  After establishing that neutrinos have mass in his previous experiments in Canada and Japan, he is investigating how heavy they are with the world’s largest ultra-high vacuum vessel in Germany and whether they are their own antiparticles at underground laboratories in the United States and Italy.  He was elected a fellow of the American Physical Society for his contributions to neutrino physics.  He is passionate about public science outreach.  Over the past decade, he has been organizing the annual Nuclear Science Day for Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts at Berkeley Lab.

Sam Sampere

Sam is currently the lab manager for Syracuse University where he runs the undergraduate physics labs and demonstration room. He joined the faculty at Syracuse after completing his undergraduate degree in physics from LeMoyne College and an MA in physics from SUNY Binghamton. He specializes in using hands-on labs and impressive demos to get across big ideas in physics. In the words of a former student “He makes all of the confusing concepts easier to understand through clever demonstrations.” For more than a decade, he has been co-organizing the Saturday Morning High School Teacher Workshops at Syracuse University. He loves seeing the excitement a new make and take bring to teachers and their classrooms. He is active in the physics education and informal science education communities and can often be seen on local news showing off his demos. He has held many leadership roles in the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) and received the AAPT Award for Distinguished Service in 2010. And, as a former student put it “he’s a pretty funny guy.”
