Join C2ST for a talk with the renowned anthropologist, Dr. Anna C. Roosevelt, as she discusses her work on how the environment and humans have interacted throughout history, and how this may inform these same interactions today!

Long-term Human-Environment Interaction in Amazonia: A Research Odyssey from 13,000 to the Present

Many researchers used to think that the tropical forest was a virgin habitat, a barrier to human evolution and development of complex societies, but this was a misconception from a lack of scientific information from prehistoric sites in such environments. Dr. Anna C. Roosevelt has been a pioneer in the research of the history of human presence in Amazonia. Her application of scientific technology to research there has had dramatic results indicating a long sequence of human cultures, from Paleoindian rock-art foragers to complex, mound-building societies with agriculture. In this talk, she will illustrate her research on that sequence and trace its implications for the evolution of both forest diversity and human origins.

Dr. Anna C. Roosevelt

A.C. Roosevelt is a four-field anthropologist interested in social and biological evolution, human-environment interaction, and human rights. She’s been a Professor of Anthropology at the University of Illinois, Chicago since 1994. Prior positions were curatorships at the Museum of the American Indian, Field Museum, the American Museum of Natural History and lectureships at NYU, Harvard, and the University of Florida.

Her research on the history and prehistory of the tropical forests and the peopling of the Americas has been funded by the National Science Foundation, Fulbright, National Endowments for the Humanities and the Arts, and others.

She has authored or co-authored eight books including Amazonian Indians from Prehistory to the Present, Moundbuilders of the Amazon, Parmana: Manioc and Maize Subsistence along the Amazon and Orinoco, Ancient Lakes: Their Cultural and Biological Diversity, and Amaz’Homme: Sciences de L’Homme et Sciences de La Nature en Amazonie, and more than 100 peer-reviewed articles in Science, Nature, The Anthropocene, Natural History, Geoarchaeology, Quaternary Geochronology, Earth Science Research, Human Biology, Paleopathology at the Origins of Agriculture, and Human Conflict from Neanderthals to the Samuru.

Roosevelt is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Royal Geographical Society, American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Anthropological Association, and the MacArthur Foundation.
