Dr. Karla Satchell has been a frequent name in the news as she leads a team of researchers to examine the atomic structure of Coronavirus Disease 19 (COVID-19), an integral step in devising a means for fighting COVID-19 as the virus continues to spread. Satchell leads the Center for Structural Genomics of Infectious Diseases, a consortium of nine labs at eight schools collaborating on the effort to better understand and devise a means for fighting the continued spread of COVID-19. The team is mapping out the proteins of the virus with the aim of finding a weak spot where medication can intervene and stop the virus from replicating in humans.

Dr. Karla Satchell

Dr. Karla Satchell is a professor of microbiology-immunology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. She holds a BS from Pacific Lutheran University and a PhD from the University of Washington. She completed her Postgraduate training as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pittsburgh and Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Satchell’s current research focuses on the role of secreted protein toxins on bacterial pathogenesis. The toxins she and her group studies are members of the MARTX family and are produced by Vibrio cholerae, a pathogen important for the diarrheal disease cholera, and Vibrio vulnificus, a pathogen that causes septicemia and necrotizing fasciitis from seafood consumption as well as wound infections. Her group studies the mechanism of action of these toxins using a combination of cell biology, biochemistry, and structural biology. In addition, they investigate the role of these toxins in pathogenesis using animal and tissue culture models with focus on mechanisms of tissue damage and evasion of innate immune clearance.
