C2ST Speakeasy with Dr. Paula Skye Tallman

Why Being Poor Can Also Make You Sick at Geek Bar Beta Chicago’s SCIENCE! Tuesday

It is well-known that there is strong relationship between socioeconomic status and health outcomes.

What is behind this association and why does it matter? In this talk, Dr. Tallman will speak about the links between socioeconomic status and health outcomes, and how psychological stress may be a key factor in understanding how this affects our health. She will then share the results of her research connecting socioeconomic status to mental and physical health outcomes in her work among the Awajún, an indigenous Amazonian population experiencing rapid lifestyle changes. She will conclude her talk by discussing why the relationship between socioeconomic status, stress, and health matters for people across the globe.

Dr. Paula Skye Tallman is a biological anthropologist who studies how changes in the environment can influence health and well-being. Specifically, she uses biological and cultural methods to examine the associations between cultural changes, stress, and health outcomes in indigenous Amazonian populations. Dr. Tallman received her B.A. in Behavioral Biology from Johns Hopkins University and her Ph.D. in Anthropology from Northwestern University. She now works as a researcher in the Science Action Center of the Field Museum of Natural History here in Chicago.
