In STEM, we privilege notions and practices built around concepts like objectivity and empiricism. But STEM professions and pursuits do not occur in a vacuum of pure objectivity. The world of STEM, the cultures and institutions that feed into it, and the applications of innovations and discoveries–these all swirl together to form a complex environment that is navigated in different ways by different people.
Traditionally, the movers and shakers in the myriad STEM fields have been straight, white, and masculine. With this in mind, and with an eye towards the future, how can non-white students and young scientists navigate STEM spaces that were not built with them in mind?
