How do Latine people negotiate their various identities while navigating the STEM world? What methods can we employ to imagine a different STEM landscape–one that is free from the barriers that Latine people face in STEM? How can we foster transformative, critical thinkers within the Latine/x community to best equip them with the challenges they will face should they choose to pursue STEM?
We recognize that Latine people are not a monolith: The Latine identity exists at an intersection between race, nationality, ethnicity, gender, and so on. Moreover, we recognize the many critiques of the term ‘Latino’, the very subject of ‘Latinidad’, or Latino-ness. Further, we understand that these rejections seek to embrace nuance by inviting minoritized identities (Black/Indigenous) into the conversation. We understand that using these pan-ethnic labels creates problematic consequences as they seek to create a monolith of people, both culturally and politically. It is then vital to create spaces where resources among these groups can be leveraged within STEM, and where critical conversations around identity and the role it plays in the STEM world can be held. Join us as we continue the conversation about what it means to navigate the STEM landscape as a Latine person and how we can move forward with the barriers that exist in mind.
