Coffee and tea are among the most widely consumed beverages in the world and have received considerable attention regarding health risks and benefits. These beverages are major sources of caffeine, a psychostimulant, but each contains a unique set of chemicals that also contribute to their unique taste and possible health effects. Understanding factors that drive beverage choice and the amount we consume therefore has important public health implications. In this talk, Dr. Cornelis summarize the latest genetic research underlying our coffee and tea drinking behaviors. She will discuss much of her own research over the past 15 years that has focused on caffeine and which has received attention from media and direct-to-consumer genotyping services such as 23andMe.
