C²ST and paleontologist Paul Sereno held film screening and Q&A on When Crocs Ate Dinosaurs, an intense scientific journey that breathes life into these long extinct terrors -- and recreates a lost world few even imagined existed.

The Chicago Council on Science and Technology, National Geographic, and Project Exploration presented:

For a long time, the Age of Reptiles seemed to belong only to its “stars,” the dinosaurs — but not anymore. Thanks to strange fossils coming out of the Sahara and other places, we now know that it was a world full of bizarre and terrifying crocodiles as well — ones that not only rubbed shoulders with the dinosaurs — but sometimes ate them. Welcome to the new crocodile Cretaceous… complete with tiny buck-toothed crocs, dog-like crocs, and terrifying triple-fanged nightmares that probably galloped after dinosaurs. Join C²ST and paleontologist Paul Sereno for an intense scientific journey to breathe life into these long extinct terrors — and recreate a lost world few even imagined existed. (Language © NGT 2009).

Sunday, December 6th at Northwestern University’s Chicago Campus, Thorne Auditorium, 375 E. Chicago Ave.

Participants traveled back in time with world-renowned paleontologist Dr. Paul Sereno to learn about an ancient human world.

Dr. Paul Sereno
Paleontologist, University of Chicago
President and Cofounder, Project Exploration

Participants traveled back in time with world-renowned paleontologist Dr. Paul Sereno to learn about an ancient human world.

In 2000, a major archaeological discovery made in Niger by a team led by Dr. Sereno opened a window onto the “Green Sahara.” The site revealed a 5,000-year-long drama of changing climate and transforming cultures. Lakeside cemeteries with of hundreds of spectacular human burials included a man seated in a turtle shell, a girl wearing an arm bracelet, and a triple burial involving a mother and two children in symbolic embrace.

These people’s tools, ornaments, diet, health, stature, genetic relationships, and appearance were reconstructed by an interdisciplinary and international team of scientists.

Location: Francis W. Parker School, 330 W. Webster Ave.

Hosted By: Project Exploration, Francis Parker School, C2ST and Science Chicago
