			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>&#8220;Moonrise&#8221; is an HD film with live symphony orchestra performed to the music of Daphnis and Chloé for the 100th anniversary of this great work of music, and is about man&#8217;s fascination with the Moon throughout time.  The film is produced by Dr. Jose Francisco Salgado, Puerto-Rican born astronomer and visual artist at the Adler Planetarium, and Executive Director of KV 265 a non-profit organization working with symphony orchestras and arts organizations around the world bringing science into the concert hall as an innovative way to interest students and the general public in science and the arts.  &#8220;Moonrise&#8221; will be presented in collaboration with the Chicago Sinfonietta, and in association with the Adler Planetarium, and the Nasa Lunar Science Institute (NLSI.) There will be a pre-concert lecture at 6:30 p.m. in the Grainger Ballroom, and the performance is at 7:30 p.m. </p>

<p><strong>Lecture Abstract</strong><br />
Dr. Schwartz will describe two of the social movements which took place during the 1970’s that were dedicated to leveling the playing field for women in science. These particular movements resulted in the formation of the “Association for Women in Science” and “Women in Endocrinology.”  Dr. Schwartz was involved in the early stages of both groups, and her experience closely reflects other women-oriented science associations which developed during those early years. Dr. Schwartz will then describe some of the reproductive science she has carried out in the lab, as examples of the kind of bioscience research possible with a laboratory of one’s own, focusing specifically on the “discovery” of the female, as well as male, gonadal hormone “inhibin.”</p>
<p><strong>About the Speaker</strong><br />
Neena Schwartz was born in Baltimore MD in 1926. She received a BA in Physiology from Goucher  College in 1948 and a Ph.D. from Northwestern University in 1953. She became an instructor in the Department of Physiology at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1953. After four years she moved to the Psychiatric Institute at Michael Reese Hospital where she served as Director of the Biological Labs. She then returned to the Illinois College of Medicine, becoming a Full Professor in 1967, and occupied this position until 1973. During this time she also served as Assistant Dean for Faculty Affairs of the college. In 1973 she occupied a position as Professor in the Department of Physiology at Northwestern University College of Medicine. In 1974 she became Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences in North western’s College of Arts and Science and William Deering Professor of Biological Sciences. In 1980 she formed the Program (later Center) for Reproductive Science at the University. She has served as President of the Society for the Study of Reproduction and of the Endocrine Society. She is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Science.</p>

<p>Explore the genetics of drug abuse with the Center for Genetic Medicine during our fall Silverstein Lecture Series on October 26 and 27, 2011 with guest speaker Glen R. Hanson, PhD, DDS, Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Utah and former director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse.</p>
<p><strong>DRUG ABUSE: a family matter?</strong></p>
<p>A conversation with Glen R. Hanson, PhD, DDS</p>
<p>Does drug abuse run in the family? We certainly know that environmental influences, such as exposure to drugs as children or teenagers, increases the risk of substance abuse later in life. However, researchers have determined that the prevalence of inheriting drug abuse ranges from 40 to 60 percent, suggesting that vulnerability to drug addiction is not merely environmental, but also genetic. </p>
<p>Come learn how the field of genetics could help prevent and treat drug abuse in a conversation with Dr. Glen R. Hanson, professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Utah and former director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Dr. Hanson will unveil the genetic elements of drug abuse and discuss how these inherited factors can increase one’s risk of developing related problems. This exciting research has the potential to improve drug abuse risk screening and advance individualized treatment methods.</p>

<p>Cynthia Kenyon received her PhD from MIT in 1981 and was a postdoctoral fellow with Nobel Laureate Sydney Brenner at the MRC in Cambridge, UK. Since 1986 she has been at the University of California, San Francisco,where she is now an American Cancer Society Professor. In 1993, Kenyon’s discovery that a single-gene mutation could double the lifespan of C. elegans sparked an intensive study of the molecular biology of aging. Professor Kenyon&#8217;s research has identified a universal mechanism controlling aging in organisms, including humans. Kenyon is a member of theNational Academy of Sciences, and she has received many scientific awards. She is a former president of the Genetics Society of America, and she directs the Hillblom Center for the Biology of Aging at UCSF.</p>

<p><strong><em>Electrofuels: ARPA-E and Innovation in the Biofuels Space</em></strong></p>
<p>ARPA-E is seeking new ways to make liquid transportation fuels &#8211; without using petroleum or</p>
<p>biomass &#8211; by using microorganisms to harness chemical or electrical energy to convert carbon</p>
<p>dioxide into liquid fuels. Many methods of producing advanced and cellulosic biofuels are under</p>
<p>development to lessen our dependence on petroleum and lower carbon emissions. Most of the</p>
<p>methods currently under development involve converting biomass or waste, while there are also</p>
<p>approaches to directly produce liquid transportation fuels from sunlight and carbon dioxide.</p>
<p>Although photosynthetic routes show promise, overall efficiencies remain low. The objective of</p>
<p>this topic is to develop an entirely new paradigm for the production of liquid fuels that could</p>
<p>overcome the challenges associated with current technologies.</p>

<p style="line-height: 21px;"><span style="line-height: 19px;">Argonne National Laboratory is celebrating it&#8217;s 10th annual Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day this February and you&#8217;re invited!</span></p>

<li>Spend the day with Argonne mentors who will talk to you about your interests and possible careers!</li>
<li>Attend the career presentation “Engineering is Fun!”</li>
<li>Hands-on activities and experiments.</li>

<p>The event is open to 6th-, 7th- and 8th-grade girls interested in math, science and engineering fields from throughout the Chicago area.</p>
<p><span style="line-height: 21px;">Girls in sixth through eighth grades are invited to learn all about science and engineering during the annual Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day on Thursday, Feb. 24, 2011, at the U.S. Department of Energy&#8217;s (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory.</span></p>
<p style="line-height: 21px;">&#8220;The event is designed to spark their curiosity and encourage girls to pursue their interests in science and engineering,&#8221; said Molly Finster, chairperson for the event and an Argonne environmental engineer. &#8220;It is a great way to reach out to our future generation of female scientists and engineers and show them all of the possibilities that exist.&#8221;</p>
<p style="line-height: 21px;"><span style="line-height: 19px;">The event is a fun and educational way to introduce girls to engineering and science while showcasing all of the different and exiting potential career opportunities available to them.</span></p>
<p style="line-height: 21px;">The students will spend the day working with a mentor, participate in hands-on activities, tour the laboratory and attend interactive presentations. They will also have lunch with some of Argonne&#8217;s leading experts, enabling them to ask questions about their work, education and how they decided to enter their chosen fields.</p>
<p style="line-height: 21px;">&#8220;The hands-on mentoring aspect of the role models is so important in helping girls envision themselves as scientists and engineers,&#8221; said Maria Power, and Argonne engineer and assistant chair of the event. &#8220;Argonne is a perfect place to inspire girls to explore all of the different aspects of science and engineering.&#8221;</p>
<p style="line-height: 21px;">The event is open to 6th-, 7th- and 8th-grade girls interested in math, science and engineering fields from throughout the Chicago area.</p>
<p style="line-height: 21px;">The deadline for applications is January 7, 2011.
