Recently, researchers at Aix Marseille Université in France and the University of Liverpool in the United Kingdom have discovered a possible way for buildings to essentially be “invisible” to earthquakes, creating a “cloaking” device. The scientists came up with this “cloaking” model by looking at stealth aircraft, which block and reduce radar detection in a number of different spectra.
The model uses a series of concentric rings made of plastic, copper, polyester, and other materials. These rings, when tuned to a specific frequency, were shown to absorb the energy from an earthquake or impact and prevent the encompassed object from damage.
The scientists envision uses for the car industry as well as “smart buildings” which would prevent damage from an earthquake using this cloak.
